Repertoire before 2001 (using the subsections above and adding an "Early English organ pieces" section)
My philosophy as a performer (organist, choir-trainer, pianist and conductor) is to eschew "fame by cd" and other similar paths which have become the expected way of proving one's worth as a musician. Having acquired an M. Mus. degree (1990) for organ performance and composition, and a Ph.D. degree (2000) for original composition, both from Sheffield University, I feel that I can now be content with such a philosophy.
Whilst not ignoring unexpected performance opportunities from afar, I see my role as serving the church and other communities to which I belong as a performer and educationalist, and as an ambassador for the music in which I have expertise, including my own compositions. For me, this thinking is authenticated by the belief that "this is where God has put me."
If people from outside my usual circles have come to know about me as a musician, it is thanks to my "children" - my compositions, which have "fled the nest" of their origin and now have independent lives. (See the "Performances" page of this website).
In line with my stated philosophy, the concerts (since August 2006) at St Paul's Church, Worksop, where I am organist, have included contributions from other performers; I perform in each concert for only a proportion of the time. As a result, the programmes are varied and I feel this is a good way of promoting organ music.
